To date, Congress has excluded millions of immigrants and their families from every federal relief package. This is not only wrong, but deeply harmful to all of us. This isn’t a time for partisanship. This is a time for courageous leaders to unite across party lines for our collective well-being and to ensure that we are all safe, healthy, and have the economic means not only to survive, but to thrive. The House of Representatives has introduced the HEROES Act, which is a crucial step toward ensuring more immigrant-inclusive policies in the next COVID-19 relief bill. The next COVID-19 relief bill must address crucial gaps left in relief legislation enacted thus far, ensuring that: - we all have access to crucial testing, health care, and economic lifelines
- everyone who files taxes is eligible for stimulus rebates
- implementation of President Trump’s “public charge” wealth test is halted
- the safety and dignity of all workers, regardless of their immigration status, is secured
- as many people as possible are released from immigration detention and immigration authorities stop arresting people for civil immigration violations
- Immigration and Customs Enforcement and U.S. Customs and Border Protection don’t receive more funding from Congress or from other sources
Encourage your representatives in Congress to support the HEROES Act and pass a final bill that works for everyone. No exceptions. Thank you for all you do and for taking part in ensuring we can all be healthy and safe! Marielena Hincapié Executive Director National Immigration Law Center | |
