Salaam, greetings of peace to you, Friend,
Last night’s virtual Ramadan celebration, The National Iftar, was such a joy to help produce — personally, I really appreciated hearing from community leaders across the country, including hospital chaplain Khurram Ahmed, who challenged the way we think and talk about COVID-19. And the two performances by Aisha Fukushima gave me life!
If you missed it, don’t worry! It’s online and available for you to watch on-demand at www.TheNationalIftar.org.
I’ve got another exciting announcement...
Muslim Advocates is teaming up with our nation’s cultural center, The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and the world-renowned Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art, Culture & Design to launch the American Muslim Futures project.
At a time when many Americans yearn to return to normal, American Muslim Futures harnesses the power of artists and civil rights advocates to create a new normal — one where American Muslims can live free from hate and discrimination.
We’re kicking off this project with a virtual showcase next Wednesday, May 20th, at 7pm ET, featuring world-class, barrier-breaking musicians who are weaving a new civic future for all Americans:
- Raef | an internationally-renowned Muslim singer/songwriter based in Virginia. Listen to a sample.
- The Reminders | a Muslim hip hop, soul, and roots duo based in Colorado. Listen to a sample.
- Madame Gandhi | a percussionist and vocalist Muslim ally based in California. Listen to a sample.
This concert marks the beginning of a powerful partnership between Muslim Advocates and these esteemed arts institutions to define our community’s future on our own terms.
So join me on May 20th to celebrate the promise of new civic futures! And if you're focused on your devotion during these last days of Ramadan, I'll make sure the showcase is available for you on-demand after this sacred month ends.
Blessings,
