The control of the White House, Senate, and House of Representatives are tightly contested. Determining the final results on the latter two may be delayed by very close contests across the country. The presidential results will be more complicated as there are 62 days until Congress certifies the winner on January 6, 2025.
We have been here before. Malicious actors will use that time to stoke fear and create chaos. They will intimidate election workers and attempt to prevent the legitimate counting of votes. Victory will be declared based on early counts, followed by false claims of fraud when all the votes are actually counted, and this will generate court challenges based on delusional conspiracy theories. As their court challenges are dismissed, alternate nefarious plans will be executed to attempt to take power regardless of the preference of the voters.
We must remain diligent and resolute to ensure that the electoral process is fair and complete.
Even with these threats, I am very hopeful about this and future elections. The demographic changes in the United States point to a future, which perhaps begins with this election, that rejects the anti-democratic, bigoted, anti-science, racist, misogynistic, xenophobic, and homophobic crusade of white Christian nationalists, who are far too powerful in our political arena even as their numbers continue to decline. Conversely, the atheist, agnostic, and religiously unaffiliated voting bloc has grown dramatically since 2008 -- from 15% to 26% of registered voters. When we exercise our electoral power in this and future elections -- our community is a constituency to be reckoned with and we can build a political culture and society to be proud of!
I know you have been inundated with financial appeals during this election cycle, so let me be the first to make an appeal for the next election cycle. Please make an investment in the Center for Freethought Equality to build our voting bloc and identify atheist and humanist elected officials, which will increase our community's visibility, promote evidence-based public policy, and protect the secular character of our government.[[link removed]]
