John, today is Election Day. No matter where you stand, the importance of this day can’t be understated.
When Black people were granted the right to vote via the 15th Amendment, it didn’t stop the literacy tests, poll taxes, interrogation at the polls, and countless other barriers to the voting booth.
Even now in 2024, we’re still seeing legislation that purposely disenfranchises Black voters—discouraging and preventing us from participating in democracy.
Many current state legislators have worked against Black liberation—but we are working for it.
We keep us safe, and we are the ones that have to fight for one another. We are the ones that have to elect the people who will push us towards Black liberation.
To put it simply, not a single one of us can afford to sit out this election. When we ignore elections, we enable the conditions that lead to investments in prison and policing. Divestment from things like housing and health care happen in just a matter of time.
Voting is one of the most powerful ways we can make our voices heard, shape our everyday conditions, and hold politicians accountable.
It's on us to advance our democracy for the future of Black lives. Voting is our fundamental right—and folks wouldn't be trying to make it hard to vote if it wasn't important.
If you haven’t yet, get out there and vote! Keep yourself safe by keeping these voter protection hotline numbers handy.
No matter what happens after today know that we will be here ready to continue the fight for Black liberation.
In love and solidarity,
Black Lives Matter
Our grassroots movement is pushing for Black liberation every single day. We are striving to create a world where Black people do so much more than just survive. It’s time we thrive.
As an organization one of our biggest hurdles is consistency.
A recurring contribution of anything you can afford goes a long way as we plan for the months, years, and even decades ahead. This is the most effective way for small-dollar donors (like you) to power our Black liberation work.
Will you make a recurring contribution of $5 or more today so that we can keep building momentum for our movement?
