Dear John,

The Government of Alberta has introduced discriminatory legislation, rooted in fear and disinformation, that will cause devastating levels of harm to some of the most vulnerable folks in our communities. In response, Egale Canada and Skipping Stone < [link removed] > will take legal action to stand up for the rights, safety and freedoms of 2SLGBTQI young people in Alberta.

All youth deserve the opportunity to grow up in a society where they are accepted for who they are. But when governments bully vulnerable people, and particularly vulnerable young people, it gives permission to others in society to do the same. Through its proposed legislation, the Government of Alberta is intruding into the personal lives of its citizens in ways that violate fundamental freedoms.

“The government of Alberta has launched an unprecedented attack on a very small population of vulnerable young people in the province. The bills in question are a clear violation of their Charter rights and will cause devastating harm. We are fighting for 2SLGBTQI youth in Alberta so that they can grow up knowing that they are valued and accepted for who they are.” -- Bennett Jensen, Director of Legal at Egale Canada

Egale Canada and Skipping Stone jointly condemn the discriminatory legislation proposed by the Alberta government in the strongest possible terms – and we are committed to using every tool at our disposal to stand up for the rights, safety and freedoms of 2SLGBTQI young people in Alberta.
