Hello there John ,
It’s Election Day! In Utah, polls opened at 7 AM this morning and will close at 8 PM, so if you haven’t gotten a chance to submit your ballot, this is it! Elections are a crucial part of how decisions are made nationally and locally. From the federal candidates, down to your county or city council, these people all impact your life.
We all know what the federal offices do, but what about our local elections? These are the people that decide what our tax rate is and how those funds are used. They decide speed limits for our neighborhoods and improve public transportation. They choose where and how much public green space a neighborhood has, and so much more! These elections are so important for our state and our communities, not just the nation. Remember, as you fill out your ballot, start from the bottom and work your way up to the federal positions!

Some important Election Day reminders for Utah voters: |
- If you are not registered to vote yet, you can register in person at a polling location on Election Day (Nov 5).
-
You do not need a Utah I.D. in order to register, just 2 forms of identification. You are required to have lived in Utah for at least 30 days prior to the election and must be a U.S. citizen.
-
If you are a convicted felon you can still vote, so long as you are not currently serving a jail or prison sentence. Your voting rights are automatically restored when you are granted parole, sentenced to probation, or successfully complete your term of incarceration. You are eligible to register and vote if you are detained and awaiting trial and have not yet been convicted of a felony.
-
Polls open at 7am and close at 8pm MST. If you are in line by the time polls close, stay in line. Even though it is closing time, you are still allowed to vote and they cannot turn you away if you are already in line.
- If you make a mistake on your ballot while voting in person, you can request a new ballot.
-
If voting machines are down at your polling location, ask for a paper ballot.
- It’s illegal for someone to intimidate or try to prevent you from voting. You have the right to vote!
- Who you vote for is between you and your ballot. No one else needs to know who you vote for, and voting records are private.
