John,
Happy Election Day.
They say you don't know how strong something is until it has been pushed to its limits. Four years ago, a violent mob sought to overturn our free and fair election by any means necessary. If not for a couple of young senate interns, they may have delayed the certification process – but not derailed it. Foreign governments have invested in misinformation campaigns targeting our elections. Arsonists have burned ballots and damaged drop box sites.
Despite all of this, millions of Americans are going to the polls, or rushing their ballots to a local drop box site, all across the country today.
Our democracy is stronger because of the time, energy, and resources you contribute to our national experiment. If that is not worth celebrating, I don't know what is.
So today, as we wait for every ballot to be counted and for every voice to be heard, we must celebrate our democracy. You can tune in to KGW from home this evening where I will be analyzing and commenting on results as they come in. You can also watch results come in with our neighbors at Revolution Hall, or join Democrats from across the state at the Democratic Party of Oregon's Election Night party in Portland.
Regardless of the results, tomorrow the work continues: healing democracy, strengthening our community, and protecting the planet. There is a role for everyone as we continue this important journey. One famous Nike ad said there is no finish line, and so it is with our democracy.
Let's power through the tape, and keep on running.
Courage,
Earl
