John, Happy Election Day!
If you haven’t already, please be sure to vote and make your voice heard! If you’ve already cast your ballot, check in with all your friends and family to make sure they’ve also voted.
Before results start coming in, we want to talk through with you what could happen after polls close.
For non-competitive seats, we can expect journalists to call those races tonight. That means they do the math and figure out that one of the candidates is basically guaranteed to win once all the ballots have been counted.
The closer the race is, the more ballots have to be counted before a winner can be called—that takes time. Sometimes that means later at night; sometimes that means days or even weeks later. Remember that in 2020, the Associated Press did not make an official call on the president-elect until Saturday.
This time around, we also need to be ready for the possibility that Trump declares victory, no matter the actual results.
In an especially close race, we could also find ourselves in a recount situation for the presidency or other candidates Truth to Power has endorsed this year.
We will be watching the presidential election results, of course, but with control of Congress up for grabs, we’re also paying close attention to swing House and Senate seats.
We will be in touch in the coming days to update you on results and ways to stay involved. We know many people are probably exhausted at this point, but our democracy needs us to keep up our engagement on this election until every last ballot is counted.
Thank you for all that you do, and hang in there!
Truth to Power
