Dear John,
On Election Day, we amplify our voices and cast our votes in the hopes of creating a more perfect union. Today, as voting continues to be a crucial component of the overall democratic process, I reflect on its practice as a vital element of civic duty and engagement.
The struggle to gain the right to vote is often viewed through a historical lens, but it is still very real and important. As a history teacher, I would pose the question to my students and ask if they viewed voting as a right or a responsibility. After much debate, and despite their initial judgement, my students often concluded that voting was both a right and a responsibility, and unprompted- they would include that voting is also a privilege. Those student-led discussions strengthened my resolve in the value that Americans still place on the right to vote, and the lengths they will go to protect it.
So today, I encourage people of all ages to engage in the election process, interact with peers, and volunteer in the community in any way that you can. As active contributors to our society, we continue to work and shape our ever-changing nation. Confirm your voter registration status and polling location here.
As a Member of Congress, I will continue to pursue policies that protect voter integrity and equitable access to the ballot. I remain steadfast in my commitment to protecting our most fundamental right; without it, all other rights are in jeopardy.
Today, polls in Connecticut are open from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM and Same Day Registration (SDR) is available. For more information regarding voting and Election Day Registration, please review the Secretary of the State’s official website here.
Thank you.
Jahana Hayes
