Attorney General Barr swore an oath to defend the constitution, but all too often, he has undermined our democracy by using his power to protect his political allies in the Trump administration from facing the consequences of their misconduct.

Just last week, he asked a judge to drop all charges against disgraced former national security official Michael Flynn — even though Flynn pled guilty to lying to the F.B.I. about his conversations with Russian officials in the lead up to the 2016 election.

That’s why I’m leading an effort as chair of the Judiciary Committee to call on the Department of Justice’s inspector general to investigate AG Barr’s corrupt pattern of placing the political needs of President Trump ahead of the rule of law.

The Department of Justice is supposed to serve the rule of law, not Trump. If Barr’s behavior is allowed to continue unchecked, the Department of Justice could continue to be weaponized against Trump’s political opponents.

That’s why we are acting now to demand an immediate investigation. Barr’s behavior is unacceptable and completely out of line with how justice should work in a democracy.

If we don’t act soon, America could slide further away from democracy, and closer to the kind of authoritarianism that our country was founded to prevent.
