Today, as we head to the polls (if you are able to and still need to do so), let us remember that voting is a profound expression of our commitment to being people of solidarity. Inspired by the values of Catholic Social Teaching, we recognize that casting our vote is not just a right but a responsibility that enables us to address the complex realities of injustice facing our world—including our country and our own community. Through our vote, we can lift up the inherent dignity of both people and the planet.
Voting is an act of love because it empowers us to discern ways in which we can build a society that places our own needs on an equal playing field with the needs of our “neighbor” both next door and an ocean away. As people of solidarity, our vote allows us to take a small action to construct a world where values of peace, justice, compassion, and mercy take hold.

Regardless of the outcome of the election, our vote is not the only way that we contribute to building a more just world. Post-election, our continued engagement as informed citizens seeking to understand the complex problems our communities and world face is critical. Our ability to dialogue with our elected officials and with others in our communities in ways that seek constructive change will be vital. In other words, “voting is an act of love,” but it is also just a step in the process of being an engaged faithful citizen.

We are grateful for your support of the Ignatian Solidarity Network in promoting a culture of “love” during this election season. May our Election Day be filled with God’s grace.
