HEARTLESS! 1.4 million healthcare workers laid off in 7 weeks . . . . . . yet some Senators from both parties want to import replacements for them! Help NumbersUSA Fight This Outrage
Dear John - Not all Senators are alike! Last week a group of U.S. Senators became HEROES by urging President Trump to STOP most new job-related visas until employment levels recover. Sens. Tom Cotton, Ted Cruz, Josh Hawley, and Chuck Grassley sent a letter to the White House rightly URGING THE PRESIDENT TO CUT MORE EMPLOYMENT VISAS in his upcoming Executive Order that would cut back immigration until the current crisis is over. Unfortunately, such people are RARE in Washington. Despite the fact that 1.4 million medical workers have been laid off recently, a separate, bipartisan group of four senators just introduced an act, S. 3599, to dramatically EXPAND the importation of foreign workers by adding 40,000 new visas for doctors and nurses. This bill to replace medical workers shows how urgently needed NumbersUSA is. This terrible bill reveals the open-border, cheap-labor lobby reaches deeply into both parties. Its authors include long-time immigration expansionist Senators Chris Coons (D-DE) and Dick Durbin (D-IL), but also Senators Todd Young (R-IN) and Perdue (R-GA) who generally lean toward lower immigration. These authors claim that hospitals are overwhelmed and therefore must need a huge boost of foreign doctors, nurses, etc. And they absurdly repeat the mantra that we just can't get Americans to do thankless jobs like . . . being DOCTORS??!! John, this is simply incredibly false! The famous Mayo Clinic alone has already laid off or reduced hours for 30,000 workers! That's just one institution! Add the medical job losses across the whole nation, and you'll find that there 1.4 MILLION medical workers laid off. Not enough doctors?? To me, it sounds like the bill introduced by Sens. Durbin, Purdue, et al, would have the effect of REPLACING laid-off American medical personnel with newly imported cheap foreign replacements. This is where NumbersUSA comes in. If the cheap-labor lobby were the only voice the Senate heard, this bill would probably easily pass. For more than 20 years, NumbersUSA has been the loudest, most effective voice for the rest of us. If patriotic Americans stand by and do NOTHING while doctors, nurses and other health care workers who may lose their homes are discarded in favor of foreign replacements right in the middle of this disaster . . . . . . then what kind of nation have we become? John, right now, so many of our members are unemployed or wondering if their business will survive the economic consequences of the coronavirus shutdown. If you are among those who can give without adding to your economic anxiety, can you give to NumbersUSA?
John, I want you to know that NumbersUSA and our millions of supporters are NOT standing by! I'm hoping and expecting that you won't be standing by either. NumbersUSA is fighting to STOP most green cards and new temporary workers during this pandemic until pre-crisis employment levels return. The excellent letter sent to President Trump by Senators Cotton, Cruz, Hawley, and Grassley powerfully aids these efforts. As the letter states: "Given the extreme lack of available jobs for American job-seekers as portions of our economy begin to reopen, it defies common sense to admit additional foreign guest workers to compete for such limited employment." Although the President has already cut out most chain migration and visa lottery visas, Sen. Cotton and the others say nearly ALL temporary work visas should also be halted during the medical and economic crisis. Now, back to the calls for MORE foreign doctors and nurses. The excuse for more medical visas given by these wrongheaded Senators is that Americans can't be found to practice medicine, be nurses, etc. Unbelievable! I guess the armies of unemployed doctors and nurses would rather play solitaire at home? When we published a news article telling our members why Sens. Durbin, Perdue, etc., wanted to bring in 40,000 more med workers, our NumbersUSA member Paul of Colorado commented: "This is ludicrous. I know of many very talented and caring students who would have been terrific physicians who could not get into medical school and had to opt for other career options... "The solution is not more green cards. The solution is to open the number of slots available to U.S. students in U.S. medical schools and training programs. The current situation discriminates against our own U.S. students." This country has lost 33 MILLION JOBS in only SEVEN WEEKS!!! Why should we admit more potential workers into the U.S. while the world crashes down on our shoulders? It's HEARTLESS! An April 9-10 USA Today / IPSOS poll found that 79% of Americans favor a temporary stop to ALL immigration. Of course, Americans think that! Yet there are Senators and lobbyists who want to jam MORE foreign workers down the throats of drowning Americans. Now NumbersUSA Action is in a tight spot. Our voice and our members' actions have never been more critical. We must powerfully back up the message from our Senate heroes that new employment visas must be stopped now. Also, we must fight against the HEARTLESS SENATORS who want to bring in tens of thousands of replacement doctors and nurses. We're fighting to PROTECT the 33+ MILLION unemployed American workers. Yet the fact that our economy has taken such a beating has pushed donations way down. That's understandable. But that makes it more important that those who can donate without anxiety do so now.
