Email from The Institute for Free Speech After a two-year legal battle, a concerned Wyoming parent got the justice he deserved. Hi John, After a two-year legal battle, a concerned Wyoming parent got the justice he deserved. A federal judge granted summary judgment for our client, Harry Pollak, who sued his school district for censoring his criticism of a school official during a public board meeting. The judge’s order permanently enjoins the board from enforcing its policy to exclude speakers solely for referring to individual employees, noting that censoring criticism but allowing for positive comments is viewpoint discrimination. This victory is our second court win in a school board censorship-related case in a single month! After the win, our client Harry Pollak said, “I am grateful to the Institute for Free Speech for their unwavering support and dedication to the defense of my First Amendment rights.” A couple of weeks ago, I told you about our case in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, representing local parents and a chapter of Moms for Liberty. If you don’t remember, the Moms were repeatedly interrupted, silenced, and some were even removed when attempting to voice their concerns about school policies, curricula, or leadership at their local school board meeting. The judge in the Wyoming case cited the Moms for Liberty ruling in his order—that’s why setting precedent matters—and we’re proud to win that precedent, which helps protect free speech nationwide.
