Hi there,
As this year's election cycle is about to close, no matter the outcomes, there will still be work to do to on a local level to advocate and work for more diverse and equitable land use, transportation and housing. One way to stay inspired is to meet with like-minded people to discuss ideas and stay together in community.
We have PLENTY of opportunities for you to do just that! Please read on to see the various events coming up this month, including our Planners of Color Happy Hour [[link removed]] .
Also note: our Readers and Writers Happy Hour has been rescheduled to Tuesday, December 3rd. RSVP again here [[link removed]] .
Upcoming Events
A Conversation with Jerusalem Demsas [[link removed]]
Tuesday, November 12, 6:30pm-8:00pm (Doors open at 6pm)
People's Book , 7014 Westmoreland Avenue, Suite A, Takoma Park [[link removed]]
More and more Americans are feeling the pain of our national housing crisis, but often struggle to pin down the actual cause. In her new book, On the Housing Crisis: Land, Development, Democracy , Jerusalem Demsas, staff writer for the Atlantic, breaks down in plain language how the democratic process has been hijacked to throw up barriers to homebuilding.
Join Jerusalem for a lively conversation with Greater Greater Washington policy directors Alex Baca and Dan Reed, where we’ll talk about ways to create a healthier, more productive form of local government.
And: if you live in Montgomery County, come when the doors open (6:00pm) and show your support for Attainable Housing Strategies [[link removed]] –the county’s proposal to make it easier to build more homes and more types of homes in areas where you can’t today–by writing a postcard to the County Council, sponsored by Montgomery for All [[link removed]] .
Planners of Color Happy Hour [[link removed]]
Wednesday, November 13, 6:00pm-8:00pm
Shanklin Hall , 2325 18th St NW, Washington, DC [[link removed]]
We'll be hosting our fourth Planners of Color meet-up on November 13 from 6:00pm - 8:00pm at Shanklin Hall (NOT Franklin Hall), a Black-owned gathering space on 18th Street. Connect with a diverse community of local planners and advocates and meet other folks who are engaged with centering equity in housing, transportation, and land-use policy.
This space is offered to any planning or planning-adjacent professional who identifies as a person of color. If you feel you belong in this space, you do belong in this space, and we welcome you. You also don't need to be an urban planner to attend, just share our vision of a Washington region where housing is abundant and affordable, it's safe and easy to get around without a car, and land use decisions prioritize racial, social, and environmental justice.
Capitol Hill Meet-up [[link removed]]
Tuesday, November 19, 5:30pm-7:30pm
Maketto , 1351 H St NE, Washington, DC [[link removed]]
Join us for drinks and community on H St! We'll connect with other folks who think that cities should be for people, not for cars, and who want to see more housing, more affordable housing, and the land-use regulations necessary to support the above—plus, hear what GGWash is working on, and what you can do to get involved. Families are welcomed and encouraged to attend. We'll have some crafts and games on hand for our younger guests.
GGWash and Friends of White Oak Happy Hour [[link removed]]
Wednesday, November 20, 6:30pm-8:30pm
Jewel of India , 10151 New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring [[link removed]]
White Oak is an area of eastern Montgomery County with a rich history: Rachel Carson wrote Silent Spring here, and it inspired Carol Black to create the sitcom The Wonder Years. It also has an exciting future, in part due to the advocacy of the Friends of White Oak, which was formed to build community and push for more public and private investment here.
That’s why we’re excited to partner with Friends of White Oak [[link removed]] for a happy hour! We’ll get to hang out, enjoy drinks and snacks, and talk about how to make East County an even better place to live, work, and gather.
