Friends,
We are excited to write to you today with news of two major victories for workers in L.A. County and the City of Long Beach.
Yesterday, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors passed permanent and retroactive right of recall and worker retention ordinances, which provides hospitality and building services workers impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic the right to return to their jobs when it is safe to do so.
These groundbreaking pro-worker policies are the first passed by any county in the country.
Then, last night, the Long Beach City Council moved one step closer to providing 33,000 Long Beach workers with 10 days of emergency paid sick leave as well as passing right of recall and worker retention policies into law.
More than 50,000 professional hospitality workers at hundreds of hotels, event centers, and airports—plus over 50,000 janitors and security officers—have won the right to keep their jobs or return to work after the pandemic is over. We estimate that between 100,000 and 200,000 workers throughout LA County will now be covered by this policy.
The County Board of Supervisors also advanced policies and Healthy LA ([link removed]) proposals to protect tenants, homeowners, and unhoused Angelenos.
Thank you to Los Angeles County Supervisors Janice Hahn and Hilda Solis for sponsoring the county motion, as well as to Supervisors Sheila Kuehl and Mark Ridley-Thomas for their support. The right of recall and worker retention policies build on a county vote to adopt paid sick leave last month.
Thank you to Long Beach Councilmembers Mary Zendejas, Jeannine Pearce, Roberto Uranga, and Rex Richardson for their leadership, and to Councilmembers Suzie Price, Daryl Supernaw, Stacy Mungo, and Vice Mayor Dee Andrews for their support. Thank you to Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia for your leadership throughout this process.
And finally, thank you to all the workers and community allies who stood up for working families and voiced your support for these protections by signing petitions, sending emails, making phone calls, and writing letters. We couldn’t have done it without you.
There is still work to be done. We are committed to working with our local leaders to build a new economy that works for all of us.
In Solidarity,
Víctor Sánchez and Lauren Ahkiam
