Below are key ballot measures and elections we’re watching this week. Visit FairVote’s website for more information on this year’s statewide and local RCV elections. (And if you have family or friends in the cities and states below, please remind them to vote, too!) Ranked choice voting ballot measures - Voters in Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, and Oregon will vote on whether to adopt ranked choice voting statewide! Any one of those states would become the largest state in the union to use RCV.
- Washington, DC; Oak Park, IL; and Richmond, CA will vote on whether to adopt RCV for local elections. Peoria, IL will vote on a resolution asking Illinois to adopt RCV statewide.
- Alaska and Bloomington, MN will vote on whether to keep RCV. Missouri will vote on a cynical ballot measure to ban both noncitizen voting and RCV.
Ranked choice voting elections - Alaska and Maine will use RCV to award their presidential electoral votes and choose their members of Congress, including a U.S. senator in Maine. In these states, voters can honestly rank their favorite candidates for president, without worrying about playing “spoiler” or feeling forced to choose the lesser of two evils. Alaska will also use RCV to elect its state legislature.
- 12 cities and counties will use ranked choice voting this November, across six states (CA, DE, ME, MD, OR, and VA).
- Portland, Oregon will use RCV for the first time and elect a new city government, including the mayor and 12 city council members! Portland voters overwhelmingly supported ranked choice voting as part of a 2022 charter reform package to overhaul their city government.
In short, this could be the biggest election ever for ranked choice voting, with millions of voters using the reform or deciding whether to adopt it. We’ll post the results of RCV ballot measures on this page, so stay tuned! Sincerely, Will Mantell FairVote Director of Communications |
