Dear Friend,
During an election year, journalists face unpredictable challenges while covering conventions, polling stations, protests, and publishing their work online. Recognizing these growing threats, CPJ has been relentless in our efforts since the start of the year, conducting safety trainings nationwide to arm journalists with the essential tools they need to operate safely in an increasingly hostile and polarized environment.
An individual journalist’s needs can be complex, encompassing both in-person and digital challenges, and our training sessions can be tailored in response to specific concerns or incidents. For example, after Raw Story investigative reporter Jordan Green was harassed and doxxed for investigating a Neo-Nazi group, CPJ provided his newsroom with training and advice to enhance their reporters’ digital security and prepare for future threats.
Of this training, Green said:
“It’s hard to appreciate how important it is to take adequate precautions to protect your personal security until you have Nazis show up in front of your home intending you harm. Having experienced such a breakdown firsthand, I found CPJ’s training to be indispensable in providing practical guidance on protecting personal data from both state actors and vigilante extremists.”
These resources are made possible by the kind support of people like you, who care deeply about protecting press freedom. We are working tirelessly to ensure journalists can safely do their jobs during the election season and beyond, but we need your help.
Please consider making a gift today to support this urgent priority. By protecting journalists and promoting safe conditions, you empower them to continue their vital work and ensure the public has access to the information they need to make informed decisions.
With gratitude,
Lucy Westcott
