Dear team,
Bill Barr auditioned for the role of Attorney General by writing a lengthy memo arguing in favor of a fringe legal theory that a President could not obstruct justice. From the very beginning, Barr has made it clear that he would be Trump’s man in the Department of Justice, and that his loyalty would always be to the President — not the rule of law.
And that’s exactly what he did when he issued a misleading summary of the Mueller report, falsely claiming it exonerated the president. And it was further cemented last week when the Department of Justice asked a judge to drop the criminal case against Trump’s former national security advisor Michael Flynn, despite Flynn pleading guilty to lying to the FBI. In fact, he pleaded guilty twice.
I spent almost six years as a federal prosecutor, and it gives me no pleasure to say this: Barr has turned the Department of Justice into a political weapon to be wielded by the President and for the President. It’s disgraceful and dangerous.
Now, two thousand former federal prosecutors and DOJ alumni – including this former prosecutor – agree: in dismissing the Flynn case, Bill Barr “has once again assaulted the rule of law,” and he should resign.
If you agree that it’s past time for Barr to resign as Attorney General, add your name to support the rule of law now.
Justice is supposed to be blind. We must stand up against this blatant politicization of the Justice Department, restore the rule of law and protect our democracy.
Thank you,
Adam
