Carrageenan: Considering the Health Risks of This Insidious Food Additive
Carrageenan is a substance made from sea moss. Sounds natural enough, but health risks arise due to the manufacturing process. High temperatures are used for extraction, and well as an acid-based bath. The consumption of carrageenan has been linked to disruption of the gut microbiome, and associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Yogurt: Friend Or Foe? A Beginner’s Reference
If your bowl of yogurt is high-quality—whole, organic, and grass-fed/pasture-raised, there’s a high probability each spoonful will support the healthy bacteria in your body and gut microbiome. Research shows positive outcomes for lowering blood pressure, reducing oxidative stress, and preventing insulin resistance. So next time you go shopping for yogurt, make the effort to put on your best investigative glasses.

Investigating High Rates of Death for Pregnant Black Mothers and Their Babies
Black women in maternal care are disproportionately treated poorly compared to White women in the same hospitals with the same doctors. As a result, health risks are increased, including fear-based negative outcomes for Black mothers and their babies. Shoes and Socks Off: How Walking Barefoot in Nature Illuminates Your Frequency
Grounding, also known as “earthing,” is accomplished by simply taking off your shoes and socks, and strolling or standing on grass, a plot of dirt, or any other terrain in nature. Research shows that the direct connectivity between your body and the earth beneath you positively affects your mental and physical health.

LED Light Bulbs: Energy Savers That Put a Damper on Your Health
When it comes to saving energy, it’s true that using LED light bulbs win hands down over the old-style, incandescent. In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to find the old filament bulbs in any sort of local store, although you’d have better luck online. That said, the “light-emitting diode” (LEDs) with their blasts of blue light pose significant health risks, including disturbances in your circadian rhythm, sleep interference, and cancer.

During the second half of October 2024, AVFCA brought awareness to specific observance days by sharing our original stories that matched these themes:
Healthy Lung Month: “Monosodium Glutamate (MSG): The FDA’s Newest Health Food"
The FDA’s recent recommendation to use MSG—monosodium glutamate—as a salt replacement was investigated. The blanket idea that you need to reduce your salt intake was questioned, and focus on the quality vs. quantity of salt was explored. There are multiple research studies linking the consumption of MSG to a variety of health risks. http://tinyurl.com/avfca-msg
Caffeine Addiction Recovery Month: “Research and Musings on Brewing the Least Toxic Cup ‘O Tea”
While it’s true that tea—both caffeinated and herbal—boasts plenty of physical and mental health benefits due to its polyphenols, there are also concerns to contend with. When it comes to brewing, and using bags specifically, research uncovers plastics, adhesives, and other chemicals unfit for human life. http://tinyurl.com/avfca-brewing
Our team also reads hundreds of articles each week, and those of interest are shared on our social media platforms. However, once or twice a week, our team reads an article that is profound or shares a perspective that is new or from an expert that AVFCA feels should be highlighted. These articles are shared on our Substack.
