Friend, our country hasn’t seen such high levels of unemployment since the Great Depression.
We’ve lost 20.5 million jobs in just the last month alone, and nearly one in four Americans are now unemployed. And these numbers are projected to increase.
Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal and other progressives in Congress have sponsored a Paycheck Guarantee Act which would offer workers, as well as businesses of all sizes, better protections. However, Richard Neal decided that the proposal was “too complicated” and “too expensive” to include in Democrats' opening offer for the next coronavirus relief bill. The first coronavirus relief bill leveraged up to $4 trillion for Wall Street and large corporations. It’s time our Congress stand up for working people and small businesses. Add your name in support of a Paycheck Guarantee that would protect and support working families and small and minority-owned businesses.
A Paycheck Guarantee would work by providing a grant to businesses who file a sworn statement with the IRS on the amount of revenue lost due to COVID-19. The grant would help cover operating costs, payroll and benefits. And payment would be made straight from the IRS to the business without banks as the middlemen.
This bill could immediately help shrink unemployment by allowing employers to rehire laid off or furloughed workers. And it would be renewable on a monthly basis. This is the scale of protection our small businesses and working families deserve.
It’s time Congress do the right thing and protect our communities by protecting our workers and small businesses. Team Morse
