Dear Progressive reader,

When I decided I wanted to be a journalist, I did so with the intention of helping people. I saw the impact that storytelling could have on those in need, including myself, a low-income, first-generation college student. I saw journalism as a way to change the world. 

While studying to earn my degree, I explored many different avenues for writing and journalism. But landing a quality internship that could financially support me while I studied proved difficult. And then I became an intern at The Progressive.

My nine months with the nationally-distributed political magazine, from August 2018 to May 2019, was absolutely instrumental to my now-budding journalism career. I learned to be a better writer, editor, and storyteller, with impact and advocacy in mind. And, as befits a magazine called The Progressive, I was paid for my time, which otherwise would have made the experience impossible.

Not only does The Progressive produce timely, transformative stories that lend voices to those who have been silenced, it also dedicates its time to helping craft the voices of young journalists with similar goals in mind, like me. And you can help sustain that mission by giving back.
