“May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears."
- Nelson Mandela
Here we are - one day away from the biggest election of our lives. The simple question of ‘how are you doing?’ has hit different this week. As we come together in these final moments, we recognize the weight of the vote before us, hopeful that our hard work will deliver a country that once again rejects extremism. It’s time to unify and restore a government committed to true service for the people.
The election at this point transcends party lines. It is clear which candidates see their campaign as less about serving the people and more about personal gain, of promoting destructive agendas that are full of fear but void of solutions. The top of the ticket has set this tone, with Trump running for presidency as just another way he can continue to do what he has done his whole life: avoid responsibility for his actions. As a convicted felon with ballooning legal and financial trouble, he is using the power of office to shield himself from consequences no ordinary citizen could avoid. Leadership rooted in selfish and insincere intentions can only result in the same. Those who continue to support him may, unfortunately, feel the painful consequences of his presidency more sharply than ever in a second term.
But my optimism is high. Quality and competency runs through our democratic candidates everywhere on the ballot and they have been giving 110% of themselves everyday for months. I have heard from readers about their election plans - as poll watchers, drivers to the polls, phone bankers, donors, and trusted advisors to their family and friends to help them decipher the ballot. There are organizations, like LUCHA, Unite Here, ADLCC, and the Harris campaign who have each knocked hundreds of thousands of doors. I have met people that have traveled here from Texas, California, Colorado, and Vermont to help our important swing state. Two hundred people showed up for a canvass in a Mesa swing district yesterday. One canvass, out of maybe 20 that were launched at the same time. This is power! And this is democracy in action.
We have outworked our opponents at every turn, and done so in a joyous way that has created whole communities of allies coming together for the first time. We stand with moms, veterans, young adults, republicans, democrats, independents, immigrants, business leaders, teachers, and so many others. I urge you to have one more conversation to ensure someone you know votes. It just might be the one that makes the difference.
With my deepest thanks,
Sarah
