FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The State Republican Party supports all efforts that the La Plata County GOP Call for Immediate Resignation of Durango 9R School Board and Withdrawal of Katie Stewart from HD 59 Race
The La Plata County community has been rocked by an unprecedented scandal involving Ben Smith, a former Escalante Middle School teacher in the Durango 9R School District, who now faces a federal indictment including 48 counts of Coercion and Enticement of a Minor, possession of child pornography, and contact with at least 30 juvenile victims. The Department of Homeland Security and FBI lead this investigation.
The Durango 9R School Board failed in their duty to protect children, allowing Smith to operate under the guise of “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” policies. We demand the immediate resignation of:
- Kristin Smith, President
- Erika Brown, Vice President
- Rick Peterson, Treasurer
- Andrea Parmenter, Secretary
- Katie Stewart, Board Member
The State Republican Party stands firmly for the protection of our children and fully supports the La Plata County GOP’s call for Katie Stewart, a candidate for Colorado House District 59, to withdraw from the race due to her support of policies that compromised student safety. We also stand alongside the La Plata County GOP in urging the Durango 9R School Board to restore public trust by stepping down immediately.
For our Children,
Colorado Republican Party
