The lawmakers urged Amtrak to commit to a 60-day delay in implementation of these changes in service during the busy holiday season and work towards a solution that avoids disrupting the lives of thousands of New Yorkers and tourists to our region. The lawmakers wrote, 'Our communities, families, and students rely on Amtrak service as a vital source of transportation. Reliable Amtrak service is also a crucial economic driver as our small businesses rely on the service to connect tourists and our Canadian neighbors to our region. With the reduction of service and lengthy delays projected to last 36 months, the proposed changes to Amtrak’s service in our state is unacceptable.' They continued, 'We implore you to commit immediately to a 60-day delay of this decision to avoid the mass disruption of this essential service during the busy holiday season. The impact the East River Tunnel project has on passengers and millions of New Yorkers should be minimized as much as possible, and the proper time should be taken to thoroughly evaluate and vet all options in a transparent manner to mitigate the detrimental effects on passengers...' Simonsen On Tuesday, the Halsey Manor Road Bridge in Manorville was renamed the NYPD Detective Brian P. Simonsen Memorial Bridge. Detective Simonsen was killed in the line of duty while responding to an armed robbery in 2019. This bridge was the last overpass he would cross on his way home from work, making it a fitting tribute to his memory. In his honor, family, friends, and fellow officers gathered on what would have been his 48th birthday for a special ceremony to ensure that his sacrifice is never forgotten. CASEWORK HIGHLIGHT: Honoring a WWII Veteran A Central Islip resident contacted Andrew's office seeking assistance in having her deceased uncle interred at Calverton National Cemetery with military honors. The constituent faced a challenge in obtaining the necessary death certificate, as she was not a sibling, spouse, or child of the deceased, complicating the process. Understanding the importance of honoring the veteran's service in World War II, Andrew's casework team quickly reached out to the National Cemetery Eligibility Verification Division on her behalf to clarify the requirements and seek a solution. The veteran was interred at Calverton with the full military honors he deserved earlier this month. Andrew knows how frustrating dealing with bureaucracy can be. That is why he has an entire team dedicated to helping constituents get what they need from the government. If you need help dealing with a federal agency, contact our office and our team will get to work on your case.
