Dear John,

The coronavirus pandemic is affecting us all in very different ways and one of the groups affected the most seriously is private renters.

The government’s temporary ban on evictions at the beginning of the crisis was welcome but there is so much more we must do urgently for the security of renters.

First, we must extend the evictions ban immediately and not lift the ban in June as currently planned, as well as permanently scrapping Section 21 “no fault” evictions.

Second, benefits must cover housing costs entirely, where needed.

And third, we must forgive the rent arrears that some people have built up during this crisis. We can’t expect renters to follow repayment plans after the crisis that would increase their outgoings when there will be even greater insecurity around jobs and income.

Keir Starmer’s Labour Party has announced a five-point plan to protect people from eviction, but it does not go far enough and will trap renters in a spiral of debt while benefiting some of the wealthiest landlords, as I set out in my response to the Labour proposal. [link removed]

Landlords who need help should be able to claim compensation from the government for these plans, but we know that we can’t trust all landlords to show compassion to their tenants when so many are in insecure tenancy agreements.

If you would like to be a member of a party committed to standing up for the rights of tenants, join the Green Party today. [link removed]
