I know that some of you might be facing financial hardship. If that's true for you, please keep tuning in. Democracy Now! is a free service for everyone.

But if you're able to give right now, your donation will go three times as far to help us produce our daily, global news hour.  Day in and day out, Democracy Now! is lifting up the frontline voices and stories of people who are describing reality on the ground during this time of global health and economic catastrophe.

Today, we interviewed journalist and activist Naomi Klein about coronavirus capitalism and how the healthcare industry and Big Tech stand to profit from COVID-19.

Klein said that tech companies envision "a new paradigm where the privileged classes who are able to isolate themselves basically get everything ... either delivered through digital streaming or by drone."

Living through this pandemic is difficult for us all, but its destructive force is distributed unequally, crushing the most vulnerable in our society—the poor, the incarcerated, detained migrant men, women and children, and communities of color that have long been the target of racist policies.

This week, we spoke with scholar Jill Nelson, who was arrested by New York City police in April for writing “Trump = Plague” in chalk on an abandoned building in her Washington Heights neighborhood. The 67-year-old African American author and activist was handcuffed, taken to the police station and held for five hours. When she finally got to call her husband, a police officer hung up on her as she was telling him where she was.

Nelson's story is not unique. Black and Brown communities are being disproportionately targeted and policed in New York as the city attempts to halt the spread of COVID-19.

Nelson spoke out about her arrest on Democracy Now!, saying, "It was absurd, absolutely absurd ... this is in a community that has one of the highest rates of COVID, has many people who are poor and working poor. There’s something the police could have been doing besides attacking me for writing the truth."
If voices like Jill Nelson's are important to you, please contribute to Democracy Now! today.

We also interviewed Harold Frazier, chairman of Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, who is defying South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem's order to take down COVID-19 checkpoints on the roads that lead into the reservation. On Friday, she gave the tribe 48 hours to remove them, but the chairman refused. The Cheyenne River Sioux are working to limit community spread because their medical resources are extremely limited. The tribe has eight hospital beds, six ventilators and no ICU.

"The governor is not my boss, or the federal government. It’s the people that live here. That’s who I work for, and that’s who I take directives from," Frazier said. "It doesn’t matter what comes today, tomorrow. We’re still going to be here. We’re still going to maintain our checkpoints."

Remember, your tax-deductible donation today will be worth THREE TIMES as much—so please be as generous as you can.

I really do believe that those who are concerned about healthcare for all, those who care about inequality and those who are fighting to stop climate catastrophe, are not a fringe minority, not even a silent majority, but the silenced majority—silenced by the corporate media.

That's why we have to take the media back, now more than ever.
