Politics is social by its very nature. It's devilishly difficult to do grassroots organizing or campaign for public office while practicing physical distancing.
Despite competing in a heavily gerrymandered district and having to campaign from home, Tricia Zunker did considerably better in yesterday's special election in northern Wisconsin's 7th congressional district than Hillary Clinton did in the district in 2016. The Republicans' vote margin was cut by about a third. With the odds stacked against her, Tricia did everything she possibly could from the confines of her home to get the word out about her candidacy, and Our Wisconsin Revolution members throughout the district worked tirelessly from their own homes to let neighbors know about Tricia and her campaign.
It's not over. The special election only temporarily fills the vacancy in the House created by Sean Duffy's retirement. Who gets a full two-year term representing the 7th congressional district will be decided in November.
Tricia Zunker is running for that full term and needs to gather enough nomination signatures by June 1 to qualify for a place on the ballot for this fall's elections. She and a whole lot of other candidates around the state need the public engaged as never before so democracy does not become a casualty of COVID-19.
You know the motto.
Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.
But a combination of a nasty virus and equally virulent partisan politics just might.
A precious national resource is endangered. It needs and warrants rescuing. If it’s not saved, we could lose a lot more than mail delivery anywhere regardless how remote. We could lose a way to vote without risking our lives. Read on...
