Dear Patriot,
Today at noon, the U.S. Senate will start
voting on amendments to HR 6172, legislation renewing the
misnamed USA FREEDOM Act (previously known as the USA PATRIOT
Act).
The first votes are on amendments from Senate
Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Senators Steve Daines
(R-MT) and Ron Wyden (D-OR).
It's urgent you call your senators at
202-224-3121 immediately and tell them to oppose the McConnell
Amendment and support the Daines-Wyden Amendment.
The amendment offered by Senator McConnell
would explicitly grant the FBI power to seize your Internet
search and browsing history!
It's vital you let your
Senators know in no uncertain terms you expect them to oppose the
McConnell Amendment!
Immediately after voting on the McConnell
Amendment, they'll vote on the Daines-Wyden Amendment that
requires a warrant before government can collect American
citizens' Internet searches and browsing history.
This amendment stops the use of Section 215
of the USA FREEDOM Act to justify the type of bulk data
collection exposed by Edward Snowden in 2013.
Since passage of the PATRIOT Act, federal
officials have claimed that Section 215 gives them the authority
to collect our data without a warrant.
However, this claim has been disputed by a
number of independent legal scholars.
The Daines-Wyden Amendment would resolve this
dispute by making it clear that federal officials have no
authority to collect your Internet browsing and search history --
let your Senators know you support this amendment.
These votes are only a few hours away.
Please call your senators at 202-224-3121 immediately and tell
them to oppose the McConnell Amendment and support the
Daines-Wyden Amendment.
Internet searches and browsing history reveal
intimate personal information about an individuals' life that
government officials have no right to know unless they have
obtained a warrant demonstrating probable cause that collecting
the information is relevant to a criminal investigation.
The FBI and other federal agencies have a
long history of targeting Americans citizens based on their
political activities. In fact, just last year we learned that
Campaign for Liberty was likely targeted for FBI surveillance!
It's urgent you call your senators at
202-224-3121 immediately and tell them to oppose the McConnell
Amendment and support the Daines-Wyden Amendment.
Remember the voting on starts at noon -- so
call IMMEDIATELY!
And please pass this on to your pro-liberty
family and friends so they can get involved with our efforts to
roll back the surveillance state.
And if you can, please chip in $100, $75,
$50, $25, or whatever you can afford to help your Campaign for
Liberty beat back the surveillance state.
In Liberty,
Norman Singleton
President
