Our rights are on the ballot this fall. John, did you see what Kamala Harris had to say about the state of reproductive health in Texas? “…Texas has a law now that offers a cash bounty for turning in someone who merely helps a friend or a family member get the care they need. She’s right — we do know how we got here: In 2021, Texas completely banned abortion with very limited exceptions. Then, the Texas Supreme Court then ruled that a woman did not qualify for an abortion under the state’s medical exception despite the fact that her doctor determined she needed the procedure to save her life. That decision forced a pregnant woman to travel out of state to receive the care she needed to save her life. The justices doubled down on that extreme decision this year, ruling against 20 women who said they were denied the ability to receive medically necessary abortions as a result of the state’s extreme abortion ban. This is unconscionable, John — and we won’t sit on the sidelines while elected state supreme court justices rip away people’s rights. The NDRC is proud to have endorsed Judge DaSean Jones, Judge Christine Weems, and Judge Bonnie Lee Goldstein for the Texas Supreme Court because of their commitment to be fair-minded, conduct an independent evaluation of the law, ensuring rights and protecting freedoms. But we need your help to push these Democracy Defenders — and so many like them across the country — to victory.
