One Step Closer to Caesar Bill Becoming Law

Good news: We are one step closer to stopping Assad and his cronies from killing civilians in places like Idlib province. As the Senate Foreign Relations Committee recently considered the Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act (H.R. 31), a "poison pill" amendment was offered at the last minute. It would have destroyed the bill's chances of becoming law, but AFS staff worked quickly in outreach to both media and Senate offices to stop it. It was soundly defeated, and the Caesar Act passed the committee by a bipartisan vote of 20-2.

Now it’s up to Leader Mitch McConnell to get this bill to the Senate floor for a full vote in September.

Syrians Protected from Deportation for 18 Months

Following our combined advocacy efforts, the Trump Administration extended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months, a sigh of relief for the more than 7,000 Syrians, and their friends and family, who are living in the United States legally.

Our coalition brought a diverse group of TPS holders to speak with Members of Congress and coordinated three congressional letters and private phone calls with officials. We also met directly with officials at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which made the actual decision.

TV Ad Pushes Trump to Save Idlib, Stop Assad

AFS helped create and air a TV ad on President Trumps' favorite shows—like Fox News Channel's "Hannity" and "Fox and Friends," and Fox Business Network's "Lou Dobbs Tonight"—to urge him to take action to stop the bloodshed in Idlib province.

Syria Caucus to Trump: Save Idlib

Syria Caucus Co-Chairs Brendan Boyle (D-PA) and Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) led a group of 33 Members of Congress in urging President Trump to take action on behalf of the three million Syrian civilians trapped in the northwest of Syria. President Trump previously spoke out to stop an impending assault on Idlib in September, leading to a ceasefire that held for nearly five months.

President Trump must again show there will be consequences if Assad and his allies continue their offensive.

Trump Administration Sanctions Oligarch Samer Foz

Thanks to the advocacy of Congress and activists, Samer Foz, Syrian businessman and ally of the Assad regime, along with 15 other individuals and entities, was finally sanctioned after years of supporting the Assad regime and building a fortune off the Syrian conflict. His publicity effort, including creating a short-lived Twitter account, failed to quell concerns that he was a sanction-free conduit for the regime's oligarchic aims. Published in Washington Institute: Congress Can Still Help Shape the Endgame in Syria

Erica Hanichak and Jameson Cunningham provide a playbook for Members of Congress to remain engaged and shape how the conflict in Syria will turn out, regardless of actions take by the Trump Administration. Recommendations include increased oversight of the Administration, using the power of the purse to support civil society on the ground, and economic pressure on both the regime and its allies like Syrian, Russian, and Iranian oligarchs who would like nothing less than to shape Syria in their image and profit off the devastation.

“Recent escalations of violence in Idlib against hospitals, schools and other civilian targets demonstrate Assad will go to any lengths to retake the country and destroy anyone who stands in his way. Syrian Christians in US Fear Deportation as their Protected Status is in 'Jeopardy' (The Christian Post)

"President Trump, Vice President Pence, Secretary [of State Mike] Pompeo have all emphasized protecting Christians who are in danger of being persecuted around the world. Syrian Christians could be sent back. And, anyone who left the country is seen as an enemy by the Assad regime. In government-controlled areas, Syrians returning from abroad are routinely met with arrest, disappearance, or forced conscription." —Jameson Cunningham, AFS Policy and Public Affairs Strategist

Trump aims to protect persecuted Christians, but some aren’t sure he’s helping (Religion News Service)
