Dear Friend of the Journal,
As the climate crisis reshapes our world, working people — especially those toiling away at poverty wages — pay the heaviest price. Many of them labor under unsafe working conditions that are quickly becoming more deadly as the planet warms. The dangers they face are unprecedented.
Earth Island Journal has been at the forefront of in-depth reporting on how climate change is intertwined with other serious social and human rights issues. Most recently, our autumn print magazine focused on the intersections of climate and labor.
In this special edition, we explored some of the shared interests between climate activism and labor, and how people are working together:
Five working class Californians share how they endure excruciating heat and wildfire smoke just to earn a living, and how they are working to improve conditions for themselves and their coworkers.
Labor unions and environmental advocates are working together to fight for green jobs that defy the unfair choice between safe, well-paying work or toxic pollution.
The undocumented workers who have become “America’s white blood cells” are helping us rebuild after devastating climate disasters, but they also face incredible risks.
Stories like these help us understand how crucial it is to join forces across movements, so that we can hold those with power accountable, and build a more just society where all life can thrive.
I’m grateful for Journal supporters like you who are passionate about building a better world and who understand the urgent need for climate action and for showing up for the people whose labor puts food on our tables.
Donating even a small amount each month helps us tell more of their stories. Can we count on you?
