As we near the end of a historic election season with a Black woman as our Presidential nominee, we have the chance to break another barrier and make history on Election Night:
Angela Alsobrooks and Lisa Blunt Rochester, two Black women, are running for seats in the Senate — and if they secure wins, it would be the first time in history that two Black women would serve in the Senate at the same time. Only three Black women have ever served, and one of them stepped down to become our Vice President.
It’s crucial that we send County Executive Alsobrooks and Congresswoman Blunt Rochester to the United States Senate, where they can protect our freedoms and our bodily autonomy by passing federal protections for abortion access, and advance the policies our communities need. They’re both competing against GOP-backed opponents, and they need our support right now in the final stretch.

Congresswoman Blunt Rochester made history as the first Black person and first woman elected to represent Delaware in Congress eight years ago, and Angela is the first woman to hold the position of Prince George’s County Executive, and the first Black woman elected to the office of County Executive in Maryland’s history. They’ve been breaking barriers throughout their long and successful careers, fighting for families in their respective communities.
Black women have been the defenders of democracy, have built new tables when we weren’t given a seat, and have delivered meaningful electoral victories through grassroots power and organizing our communities.
But we’ve only seen three Black women serve in the US Senate, out of the 2,004 senators in our country's history. We can make history up and down the ballot this November.
Onward,
Ayanna
