Last year, during a routine anatomy scan at 19 weeks pregnant, Allie received the devastating news that the baby she was joyfully expecting, Miley Rose, was not going to make it.

Following the diagnosis, Doctors warned that continuing the pregnancy would endanger Allie’s life. But, the Tennessee state legislature, which is 85% male, had passed a near-total ban on abortion in 2022. She was forced to leave her home state, devastated and heartbroken, to obtain the life-saving care she needed:

“With a risk of sepsis, blood clots, or more, I underwent an emergency abortion. I did this alone: in a city I had never been to before, without my family or my husband there by my side,” Allie said.

After this horrible, tragic experience, Allie began advocating for a new policy she titled “Miley’s Law,” which would add an exception for fetal anomalies to her state’s abortion ban.

However, her legislator, Rep. Jeff Burkhart, did not have any empathy for her experience. He told her that if his own daughter had been in her position, he’d have wanted her to continue the pregnancy… he also told her “most of the time the pregnancies that go bad are usually the first pregnancy.” (???)

It’s way past time we elect legislators, not mansplainers who have no idea what they’re talking about.

Betches News recently published the audio from that conversation, “In recently unearthed audio from June 2023, Republican Tennessee representative Jeff Burkhart is heard speaking to two women who had lost pregnancies. In the conversation he actively tried to invalidate their experiences because of his own misinformed understanding of reproductive health.
Almost a year earlier, a ban on abortion from the point of conception with zero exceptions went into effect in Tennessee.”

After the conversation, Phillips wrote to Buckhart and said, “Every chance I get to tell my story, I will… Who knows, maybe one day I’ll run against you.”

Now Allie is running for HIS SEAT in the TN House of Representatives – and she is within striking distance of actually winning it – but she needs our help.
