Dear John,
The coronavirus pandemic has had a huge impact on companies large and small, but when it comes to tackling the climate crisis, the business community is anything but ‘business-as-usual’.
Today Ceres is bringing more than 300 investors and companies, including Fortune 500 heavyweights such as Dow, General Mills and Microsoft, to call on a bipartisan group of federal lawmakers to build back better by infusing resilient, long-term climate solutions into future economic recovery plans. |
Collectively, today’s Lawmaker Education and Advocacy Day (LEAD on Climate 2020) is
the largest-ever call to action from the business community on the ongoing climate crisis
. The companies participating today are both large and small businesses that represent nearly every sector of the economy, including retail shops, manufacturers, healthcare services, food and beverage companies, outdoors industries, technology companies, and energy providers.
"As the U.S. embarks on the path to recovery from the coronavirus pandemic, responding to immediate health and economic needs of the country is critical. At the same time, we must keep up the momentum on our progress to tackle the long-term global risks posed by climate change,” said Cynthia Curtis, senior vice president of sustainability at JLL, the second largest commercial real estate services company in the world.
Today’s virtual event has more than four times the businesses participating than last year’s LEAD event in Washington D.C.—which brought together 75 companies to advocate for a national price on carbon. This increased momentum demonstrates that even during a global pandemic, leading companies are aware that the climate crisis is a real and urgent risk that must be addressed by Congress.
We know that when investors and companies talk, policymakers listen. Which is why we’re leading businesses to urge House and Senate lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to include climate mitigation actions as they consider how future rounds of economic recovery spending should be allocated, stressing the continued importance of investment in resilient infrastructure and the need to put Americans back to work with durable, clean energy jobs.
We also know that we couldn’t do this important work without you—our supporters—so thank you. Together, we can and we will build back better. |
Onward!
