John,

Four days from now, most of us will be doing the same thing: watching the news, scrolling our feeds, and anxiously awaiting results to start streaming in. Having worked in politics for most of my career, arriving at the end of any election always feels surreal to me. No more campaigning, no more speculating, no more reading the tea leaves. Time to let go and see what happens.

It’s a relief for many Americans to get to this point, but it’s also anxiety producing – more so this year than ever. A recent Wall Street Journal poll found that 87% of voters believe America will suffer permanent damage if their preferred candidate loses. It’s obvious why – we’ve been told as much by both parties for months now. Endless warnings of fascism or communism have taken a serious toll on our political wellbeing as a country.

You already know how No Labels feels about this: It’s irresponsible and dangerous for leaders to stoke these fears and divisions to win elections. It’s a sign of serious problems in the system. If you’re reading this, chances are you agree. So let me point out something less obvious instead – that this fear on both sides also says something positive about the American people. Republicans and Democrats alike are afraid for the same reason: because they love our country.

Ultimately, that’s why we should all be hopeful heading into this election, because we’re a nation of patriots. No Labels has tried to be a voice for channeling our shared patriotism in a positive direction throughout this race. We’re continuing that push in these final days by helping our community make an informed decision. For example, we’ve shared this chart ([link removed] ) that cuts through the divisive rhetoric to show where the candidates stand on the biggest issues facing our country.

We will also be there with you every step of the way next week as the results come in. As we mentioned in our programming note, we’re organizing calls with leading experts and lawmakers who will help us navigate any outcome, and we have additional leaders on standby to address particular uncertainties or difficulties that may arise.

Finally, while most political movements will be winding down next week, we’ll be gearing up for the real work to begin. We’ve been laser focused for the past several months on preparing for our conference on December 12 and everything that will follow. No matter who wins, our mission will be to give power to the middle in Washington by mobilizing independent-minded leaders to solve the big challenges facing our country.

We need you to play a part in that. For now, the best thing we can all do is stay calm. Know that whichever way it goes, love for America is at the root of the outcome. If we can accept the results with dignity and maintain our faith in each other, America’s best days will still be ahead.

Thanks for being a part of this movement. We’ll be in touch next week.

Here are 3 takeaways from our No Labels Talks episode with Admiral William McRaven:

-

Education as National Security: The U.S. faces a long-term national security risk due to challenges in K–12 education. Without strong foundational education, particularly in STEM and critical thinking, the U.S. risks weakening its future leadership and competitiveness on the global stage.

-

Ukraine’s Strategic Reality: The Russia-Ukraine War has devolved into positional warfare, reminiscent of World War I, with both sides facing a tough stalemate. McRaven suggested that the best possible outcome may be an armistice, where both Ukraine and Russia hold their positions, and international funds are directed toward rebuilding Ukraine.

-

Military Readiness and Alliances are More Important Than Ever: U.S. military readiness and strong alliances are essential in deterring global adversaries. This includes ensuring a robust military-industrial base and maintaining diplomatic and economic influence, particularly to counterbalance threats from coalitions of countries like Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea.
