A staggering $1.9 billion in billionaire cash has flooded into this election already, with the man heading up the richest billionaire family of all, Elon Musk, spending $133 million alone, trying to buy his way to political power.[1] Those are among the disturbing findings of our latest report on billionaire campaign spending.
Now, billionaire-owned newspapers like The Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times are refusing to endorse candidates for the first time in decades.[2] Their absence from the conversation gives cover to a relentless billionaire agenda intent on shaping government policy without public accountability.
When billionaires control the media, the political messages reaching Americans become part of a billionaire-backed agenda. This money is aimed at derailing fair elections and filling powerful positions with officials willing to maintain billionaire-friendly policies like low corporate taxes, gutted IRS enforcement, and weak campaign finance regulations.
These billionaire families view democracy as a system for them to control, and they’re throwing every dollar they have at it. Their nearly $2 billion of campaign contributions is drowning out the voices of everyday Americans who simply cannot afford to compete with this overwhelming political spending.

Unchecked billionaire power is also paving the way for a darker political agenda. The Wall Street Journal recently uncovered a massive funding network of billionaire-funded PACs promoting “Stop the Steal 2.0”, a scheme designed to contest election outcomes.[3]
If they don’t get the result they want, they’ll bury local officials in lawsuits, grind ballot counting to a halt, and try to overturn the entire election process.
When billionaires use their untaxed fortunes to rig elections, our country moves closer to oligarchy, a system where government serves only the wealthiest few. If we allow billionaire spending to control our government, public policies will increasingly favor them with more tax breaks for the ultra-rich, cuts in public services for working families, and relaxed regulations that allow big corporations to endanger our health, safety, and economic well being.
It’s clear: the only way to rein in billionaire influence is to implement a Billionaire Minimum Income Tax, restore strong corporate tax enforcement, and end these political dark-money schemes.
