John,
Thanks for sticking with us in the fight to cancel student debt. đź’Ş
We wanted to update you on what’s been going on in the last few weeks and give you the opportunity to join us in taking action for all student loan borrowers— especially those who have been left out of previous stimulus packages. [[link removed]]
This pandemic is hitting everyone hard, but many student loan borrowers are being hurt more than others. Young people who make up the “gig economy” are suffering from skyrocketing unemployment numbers.
Despite paying taxes, undocumented students recieved no aid from the CARES Act. Black families are, and have been, struggling to afford higher ed due to systems that have prevented wealth accumulation, such as redlining, racist banking policies, and the racial wage gap.
During this pandemic, our biggest priority is still to cancel at least $10,000 of student debt for EVERYONE. Click here to tell the Senate and congressional leadership that this is the quickest way to provide maximum relief to those who aren’t able to make ends meet. [[link removed]]
TAKE ACTION [[link removed]]
Advocates have been hard at work pushing for solutions on multiple fronts. Senators Durbin, Brown, and Warren and Representatives Takano and Jayapal introduced a plan to grant full student loan discharges to defrauded student borrowers [[link removed]] in the next COVID-19 relief package.
In addition, advocates and policy experts are asking congressional leadership to prevent future students from going through what current borrowers have by asking for funding for states to stabilize their higher education budgets in order to prevent further tuition hikes.
Finally, state governments are partnering with private loan institutions to provide some relief to private student loan borrowers. But we need federal action to help ALL private student loan borrowers who are still struggling to make payments and also afford necessities like food or medication.
Be an advocate and an ally to those who are being crushed by debt during this pandemic. Take action then forward this email to five of your friends who have student debt or know someone who does, and tell them to do the same. [[link removed]]
