This week, South Asians across the world are celebrating Diwali, a festival that speaks to the deepest hopes of our community. Also known as the Festival of Lights, it’s a moment of illumination, of connection, and of profound possibility.
And this year, it just so happens to coincide with an election in which we’ll have the chance to elect the first-ever South Asian as President of the United States.
On election night in 2016, Kamala Harris and I broke barriers together. I became the first South Asian woman ever elected to the House of Representatives, and she became the first South Asian woman ever elected to the Senate.
Now we stand at the brink of an even more transformative moment. It’s not just a political milestone. It's a testament to the journey of generations of people who have worked, dreamed, and persevered to get us to this moment.
Our community's story is one of resilience — of voices that refuse to be dimmed and of traditions that continue to shine brightly across continents. We see this in the vibrant celebrations happening in homes and communities across the nation. In the glow of clay lamps, in the warmth of shared meals, in the sparkle of joy that connects us.
To our diverse South Asian community — Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Jains — this is a moment to honor our collective strength. To recognize the challenges we face, the fears that sometimes shadow our experiences, and also the power we have to uplift, to support, and to create meaningful change.
As we gather with family and friends, let us recommit ourselves to a future of true belonging. Where every voice matters, where every story is heard, where our collective light can transform our shared landscape.
