Dear John,
Every minute, an entire garbage truck’s worth of plastic pollution is dumped
into our oceans.
Whales, dolphins, and other marine animals are washing up dead on beaches with
stomachs full of plastic bags. And scientists recently found disposable plastics
at the bottom of the Marianas Trench -- the deepest corner of our oceans.
Plastics are suffocating our marine life and polluting coastal communities
around the world. If we want to put an end to this crisis, we need to cut off
plastic pollution at the source -- the petrochemical industry. But we can’t do
this without you.

Nearly 8 million tons of plastic enter our oceans each year. And they never go
away -- they break down into micro-particles, poisoning our environment and
marine life. Scientists warn that by 2050 there could be more plastic in our
oceans than fish.
You can’t read the news without seeing images of beaches covered in plastic
water bottles, but the pollution this industry causes doesn’t stop there. 99% of
plastics -- including straws, bags, and water bottles -- come from fossil fuels.
The industry is pushing hard to build new petrochemical facilities that rely on
fracked gas to create even more plastics. And those plants poison the
communities who live nearby.
We must drastically change course. And there is simply no way for us to
eliminate plastic pollution -- and curb climate change -- without addressing the
petrochemical and fossil fuel industry’s role in causing both the crises in our
oceans and our climate.
The good news is, Congress is finally beginning to do something to address the
petrochemical industry’s devastation. Last month, a measure to start to rein in
the petrochemical industry led by Representatives Ilhan Omar and Pramila Jayapal
passed. Now, we need your help to build on this momentum.

Plastic pollution is hurting communities, climate, and the environment. It has
devastated aquatic wildlife like sea turtles and whales. And it’s polluting
coastal communities around the world and poisoning communities near the
petrochemical plants, many of which are low income and communities of color.
At Friends of the Earth, we’re not going to let the petrochemical industry get
away with continuing to pollute our oceans, harm communities, and drive climate
chaos. That’s why we’re ramping up our efforts to keep fossil fuels -- like the
fracked gas that the petrochemical industry relies on -- in the ground. We’re
pushing Members of Congress across the country to publicly call for an end to
fossil fuels.
At the same time, we’re pushing cities, states, and corporations to stop
enabling plastic pollution. We’re mobilizing thousands of Friends of the Earth
members like you to sign petitions and contact your local elected officials to
phase out plastic straws, plastic bags, and other single-use plastic products.
But we need your help to keep this work going.
