Hi John,
As we stand on the cusp of the 2024 Election, I find myself reminiscing on the windy path that led me here, in Congress representing my home district.
When my boys were young, my husband and I were both working full-time. As soon as I got off the night shift from the Chapel Hill Police Department at 7am, I would go straight to my sons’ classrooms to volunteer.
Not only did this serve as an opportunity for me to spend more precious time with my children, but it opened my eyes to the social disparities affecting students firsthand, especially Black and brown kids, in the classroom. I couldn’t stand by as students were being underserved, so after doing everything I could do as a volunteer — I ran for School Board.
On the School Board, I fought tooth and nail for better funding for our schools. But eventually, I knew I had to run for Orange County Commissioner to make concrete changes.
As Orange County Commissioner, I championed the construction of two schools, two senior centers, and affordable housing initiatives — but knew the next step to securing long-term progress for our children’s and communities’ future was running for State House.
I championed legislation for women, voting rights, and environmental protection. But, when I could do nothing more as State Senator, I ran for Congress.
I got into this line of work in pursuit of building a better life for my community and followed my heart throughout every single step. Now, there’s still SO much more I can do. In just 4 days, you can send me back to Congress and keep building progress for NC-04. If you’re with me in this fight, will you chip in $5 or more right now to get out the vote and defend my seat?
