Dear team,
We are heartbroken and outraged. When we say that abortion bans place real lives in danger, we aren't being hyperbolic.
Today, ProPublica published its second heartbreaking story in three days exposing the deadly consequences of Texas’s restrictive abortion laws. This time, the report tells of Nevaeh Crain [[link removed]] , an 18-year-old who tragically died after three visits to Texas emergency rooms. Despite her worsening condition, doctors delayed critical care for nearly 20 hours, fearing repercussions under Texas's abortion ban.
Nevaeh's story joins a growing list. Earlier this week, ProPublica reported on Josseli Barnica [[link removed]] , a young mother who died after enduring a 40-hour wait for miscarriage care—care that was restrained by Texas's vigilante abortion law, S.B. 8. She, like Nevaeh, lost her life because healthcare providers were beholden to state legislation rather than medical reality.
In Texas alone, pregnancy-related deaths have risen by 56% since the 2021 abortion ban went into effect. Laws like S.B. 8 make pregnancy riskier, impacting anyone who might face a complication. Even in emergencies, doctors are prevented from providing lifesaving care. And adding insult to injury, Texas's response has been to appoint an anti-abortion advocate to an important state committee that oversees maternal mortality—a move that further endangers those at risk.
These tragedies are not isolated. In September, ProPublica reported on the deaths of Amber Nicole Thurman [[link removed]] and Candi Miller [[link removed]] , who both lost their lives after not receiving timely abortion care in Georgia. Nevaeh, Josseli, Amber, and Candi should be here today.
This is why we fight. Abortion bans are causing irreparable harm, pain, and heartbreak across the U.S. And with you by our side, we won’t back down.
Healthy pregnancy experiences are possible when we invest in reproductive freedom. That is why we work so hard to support our clients who offer patient-centered medical care, and advocate for laws that allow people to receive the full range of services they may need throughout their lives.
Thank you for standing with us. Your support fuels our determination to prevent more lives from being lost to such injustice.
Onward together,
Center for Reproductive Rights
