Dear Friend –
The clock is ticking. With less than one week from Election Day, Big Tech platforms are continuously rolling back the very policies that once helped prevent election misinformation, hate speech, and violence.
This election cycle, we’ve seen it all: AI-generated deepfakes of presidential candidates, conspiracy theories about FEMA emergency responders during a natural disaster, and misinformation spreading across social media platforms, leaving the general public confused and election officials powerless.
Despite having eight years to learn from Russian interference in 2016, platforms like Meta, YouTube, and TikTok have rolled back the critical safeguards needed to protect factual public discourse:
Meta cut tens of thousands of staff members from their content moderation teams and disbanded their election integrity unit. [1]
Facebook and YouTube reinstated Donald Trump despite his history of inciting violence and spreading election disinformation. [2]
YouTube rolled back bans on false claims about U.S. elections, even though it still restricts similar disinformation in Germany and Brazil. [3] [4]
TikTok approved ads containing blatant election misinformation just weeks before voters go to the polls. [5]
Big Tech platforms are abandoning their responsibility at the worst possible moment—and we need your help to push back.
Share our new video highlighting the ways Big Tech is backsliding ahead of the election:
We’ve seen this movie before, and the ending isn’t a happy one. Meta quietly shut down CrowdTangle, a vital tool for monitoring the spread of misinformation. [6] And X (formerly Twitter) has devolved into a hub for falsehoods and harassment, with Elon Musk personally amplifying election conspiracies and targeting marginalized communities from his account. [7]
The message is clear: without immediate action, disinformation will run rampant, and the integrity of our elections is at serious risk.
Big Tech isn’t living up to its responsibilities, but together, we can demand better. Your support—whether by sharing our work or chipping in—helps us expose harmful practices and push for accountability. Will you join us by contributing $10, $25, or whatever you can? Every action and every dollar makes a difference in this fight.
