Olá from Brazil

This week I've had the absolute honour of representing the United Kingdom at the G20 Health Ministers Conference in Rio de Janeiro.

It's been my pleasure to meet and speak with health ministers from around the world, from South Africa to Singapore, discussing how we can support each other and improve health globally.

Back home, I was happy to support the first Labour budget since 2010, as we begin a new chapter of rebuilding the foundations and building a Britain for the future.

G20 Health Ministers summit

It was a pleasure to speak at the discussion on ‘One Health’ and particularly Britain’s leadership role in the field of antimicrobial resistance and on public health rapid responses to animal-human diseases, which is especially pertinent now we have the first case of Mpox Clade 1b..

Global cooperation on health is so crucial as we face the same challenges and threats planet wide; we can - and should - work together and learn from each other. And the message is clear: Britain is back! 🇬🇧

SUS visits - Botafago Vaccination Centre & CER Barra.

Whilst in Brazil it was my pleasure to see some of the work of the SUS (Sistema Único de Saúde), the Brazilian health service that was based of our own NHS.

This included a visit to the Botafago Vaccination Centre to see how they're reducing health inequality in the poorest parts of Rio.

I then visited CER Barra, a new clinic that triages patients entering A&E, either providing them with medicine or taking them in for intermediate care.

It's great to understand and learn from other countries dealing with similar healthcare challenges.

Meeting the Brazilian Health Minister

It was an honour to have a fruitful formal bilateral meeting with Brazil's Health Minister at the G20 yesterday in Rio De Janeiro.

We signed a Letter of Intent on UK-Brazil health cooperation, strengthening our ties and supporting collaboration across environment, pandemic preparedness and innovation.
