John, I just delivered more than 210,000 signatures from Common Cause members like you to Speaker Mike Johnson’s office, calling for a ban on guns at polling places nationwide – but we're not done yet.
We deserve a safe and welcoming experience as we cast our ballots in this election and beyond. But in years past we’ve seen reports of people openly carrying weapons as voters go to the polls – intimidating everyday Americans who are just doing their civic duty.
That's whyCommon Cause is taking bold action to protect voters. Just this year, we helped pass laws restricting guns at polling places in New Mexico and Massachusetts – and with your help, we can bring this solution to every state in the nation.
John, you still have a chance to remind Congress that voting is meant to be an act of hope – NOT fear. Here’s what some of your fellow Common Cause members have shared:
“Although I am a firm believer in the second amendment, there is no place for firearms at the polling station.” - Jake from WI
“As a long-term poll worker, it's unbelievable that one should even have to bring up this subject. It's just simple common sense.” - JoAnn from NY
“Voters and poll place workers feeling safe is fundamental to a democracy.” - Barbara from OR
“I am a veteran, and I support this petition to keep weapons away from polling places. Intimidation is not freedom.” - Gregory from IN
“Banning guns at polling places is just common sense. People should be able to vote without fear or intimidation, and election workers should be able to serve without fear or intimidation.” - Virginia from IA
They’re right – no matter what you think about gun safety laws, banning guns at the polls is a commonsense step that every American who loves democracy should be able to agree on right now. Our democracy works best when every voter feels safe and empowered.
Together, we can ensure that every American can vote without fear.
Thanks for all you do,
