Dear SPUC supporter,

Yesterday, on 31 October, SPUC held a high-profile demonstration outside Westminster, in protest of Orwellian buffer zone legislation which came into force across England and Wales that day.

SPUC’s demonstration featured pro-lifers dressed in prison jumpsuits, highlighting the absurdity of the restrictions imposed by the legislation. Demonstrators held signs outlining their so-called "crimes" as defined by the new law, including peacefully praying and offering help to women in crisis pregnancies. This striking visual display brought attention to what SPUC views as an illiberal and dangerous change in law that criminalises peaceful pro-life activity.

DUP MP Jim Shannon, also attended the demonstration, rallying in defence of free speech and religious freedom.

New Buffer Zone legislation which is now in force across England and Wales outlaws all pro-life activity within 150 metres of abortion facilities. The Home Office has also indicated that the ban may also include silent prayer and “any behaviour where someone is intentionally trying to – or recklessly acting in a way that might – influence a person accessing the service”.

Freedom to pray, freedom to think, and the defence of precious human life should never be criminalised. This is a chilling moment in Britain's history.

Buffer zones are not just an outrageous assault on civil liberties, this legislation removes a lifeline for women. Many children are alive today because their mother received help and support from a compassionate pro-life person outside a clinic.

Buffer zones only protect the abortion industry, not the women and unborn children who pass through its gates.

I would like to assure you that SPUC is actively consulting legal experts on this matter. SPUC believes that the inclusion of silent prayer in buffer zone legislation is especially vulnerable to legal challenge.

I would like to extend my thanks and gratitude to all who united with SPUC at yesterday’s demonstration, and to everyone who has tirelessly campaigned with SPUC on the issue of buffer zones.
With best wishes
