But the contest between Democrat Curtis Hertel and Republican Tom Barrett is ensnared in the contentious politics around electric vehicles, prompting a reckoning with Democrats’ landmark climate law. At stake nationally is whether Republicans can flip the seat being vacated by Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin to help them maintain their slim House majority, or if Democrats can defend the seat in hopes of capturing control of the chamber. The district — home to the state capital of Lansing and a strong auto industry presence — could be a national bellwether...But even in friendly corners — the UAW endorsed
Kamala Harris for president — the EV transition provokes anxiety. The rollout of charging infrastructure has been painfully slow, EVs are often still too expensive, and some companies like Ford and GM have scaled back EV plans as demand has proven unpredictable, prompting concern among workers and union members about whether it will all pan out.

Maybe Ford should shift production to garbage trucks.

(10/31/24) reports: "Ford Motor is pausing production of its electric F-150 Lightning truck for several weeks, as the outlook for electric vehicles remains downbeat, with car companies confronting slumping demand. The Dearborn, Mich., automaker said Thursday that it would idle the assembly factory that makes the battery-powered truck from mid-November to Jan. 6. The Lightning, a centerpiece of the legacy auto manufacturer’s EV strategy, has been the victim of steep price cuts and waning interest from consumers. 'We continue to adjust production for an optimal mix of sales growth and profitability,' Ford said. The pause comes less than a year after Ford announced it was permanently cutting a production shift at the plant in suburban Detroit, where it builds the electric truck. The move is also days ahead of the U.S. presidential election, where government support for EVs has been sharply debated with Michigan being a major swing state. Automakers in the past year have scrambled to adjust
plans for their EV models after finding weaker-than-expected demand from car buyers."

Candy is also commonly thrown out due to preference or dietary restrictions and the non-recyclable wrappers contribute to millions of pounds of trash per year, experts told ABC News. For Halloween 2024, Americans are expected to spend $3.8 billion on costumes, $3.8 billion on decorations and $3.5 billion on candy, according to the National Retail Federation. However, there are ways to partake in the Halloween revelry while minimizing harm to the planet, according to experts...Most Halloween costumes are made of oil-based, non-biodegradable materials like polyester, nylon, acrylic and spandex, Silverstein said. 'That’s like dressing up in plastic bags,' Silverstein said...Another big way to reduce Halloween waste is by buying Halloween candy that has recyclable wrapping, since many single-use candy
wrappers are not recyclable or even biodegradable, according to Keep America Beautiful...Sending digital invitations is one of the easiest ways to initially reduce the carbon footprint associated with Halloween celebrations, the experts said. Sustainability can be a theme for your next Halloween get-together as well."
