As Attorney General Eric Holder put it, North Carolina is “one of the most egregiously gerrymandered states in the country.” Let’s talk about how we got here and how we’re fighting back right now — as we work to win a North Carolina election that’s flying under the national radar. In October of last year, Republicans in the state legislature manipulated the maps to gain unearned power. And state supreme court justices acted as ideologues instead of neutral arbiters of the law — reversing the court’s own very recent precedent and allowing those maps to move forward. Shockingly, the current gerrymandered maps allow Republicans to hold supermajorities in the legislature even if Democrats win statewide elections. And it’s important to remember that even if Democrats hold the governor’s seat this year, a Republican supermajority in the legislature can override his veto. You’ve probably heard a lot about the governor’s race in North Carolina this election, even if you don’t live there. But here’s the critical North Carolina race not enough people are talking about: A state supreme court candidate has openly said he wants a Republican majority on the court for the upcoming redistricting cycle. He praised North Carolina’s extreme congressional gerrymander. And he joined a deeply controversial ruling that would have established precedent for so-called personhood laws in North Carolina — the foundation for restricting abortion and banning IVF.
The election happening in just a few days will help shape the future of fair maps for North Carolinians. We’ve proudly endorsed Justice Allison Riggs for the North Carolina Supreme Court because she has proven to be a fair-minded and independent voice on the court. She is a tenacious civil rights attorney who has been a champion of every American’s fundamental rights, including voting rights. By re-electing Justice Riggs and getting new pro-democracy leaders on the North Carolina Supreme Court, we can pave the way for fair maps that give everyone in the state a fair chance to make their voices heard. And we can stand against GOP gerrymanderers who will keep trying to dilute the will of the people. This election is just one of hundreds we’ve identified across the country where your support can make an outsized impact to defend our democracy. Thank you, Team NDRC P.S. — Make sure anyone you know living in North Carolina has the information they need to make their voices heard in this election. Forward this email with the stakes in this election. The last day of early voting is this Saturday, November 2!
