Research Highlights: An Apology to Indigenous Americans: Last Friday, President Joe Biden issued a formal apology on behalf of the United States government for its role in forcing indigenous American children into boarding schools for over a century. At the Gila River Indian Community in Arizona, the president called this policy a “sin on our soul” and promised to do more to make up for a policy that for decades led to the abuse, neglect, and even death of indigenous children. Closing Messages, Harris and Trump: The Democratic and Republican nominees for president, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, gave major speeches in the past week outlining their closing messages in the campaign. Candidate Trump held a five-hour rally in Madison Square Garden in New York, and Candidate Harris gave a speech in Washington, D.C. After a series of highly controversial speeches by comedians, politicians, and other high profile supporters of the former president, Trump’s speech promised an “era of retribution” followed by a list of grievances against him and his supporters from his opponents. Harris, meanwhile, closed out her campaign’s message by contrasting herself with Trump, saying that she will not be a divisive president and her opponents and critics will have a seat at the table if she is elected. Election Day 2024: Every state is holding elections next Tuesday, November 5th, for offices from president on down to city and local positions. At the federal level, there is an election for president as well as 34 U.S. Senate seats, all 435 U.S. House seats, with partisan control of each chamber rated as a toss-up. Additionally, 11 states will elect a state governor, 30 will hold elections for other statewide offices, and 44 states will hold elections for state legislative seats.
