Millions of Americans will cast votes to make sure we defeat Donald Trump in November.

But beating Trump at the ballot box is only one piece of taking back our government.

If we're going to restore our democracy, we've got to keep our elections open and free from outside threats to undermine and interfere.

And that means taking security seriously, ensuring our country's right to determine our own destiny, and about every American's right to be a part of that determination.

A vote is a personal choice: your ability to, in private and for yourself, help set our country's direction.

But what if your vote is compromised? What if voting machines are hacked?

The solution seemed simple: pass enhanced election security measures, head off efforts to attack our elections in 2020 like they were attacked in 2016.

Unfortunately, the coronavirus has added an additional layer of danger and disorder to safeguarding our votes.

The problem, however, is that Senate Republicans are determined to look the other way when it comes to threats to our democracy.

This leaves our democracy and the future of our country in limbo at best, and a crisis at worst. These problems with election safety are only going to get worse before they get better. In fact, for months, I've been sounding the alarm: what happens in 2020 with regard to election security will make 2016 look like small potatoes.

So what do we do? My solution has three parts:

1) Organize, organize, organize. Create the largest grassroots movement in our country's history to overcome any effort to undermine our country's ability to determine its own destiny.

2) Win. Vote out everyone who is obstructing and undermining efforts to secure our elections from hacking and outside interference.

3) Reform. In 2021, with a new Democratic president and Congress who aren't looking to benefit from outside actors influencing our elections, pass the most sweeping election security reforms in our nation's history - starting with permanent national Vote-By-Mail.

Sounds simple, right? But it's going to take each and every one of us working as hard as we can for the rest of this year, just to have a chance of being successful.

Our votes are only as strong as our ability to trust them. We must do everything we can to make sure that we protect the integrity of our elections.
