Celebrate Oldham's birthday as the borough turns 175 today

Today marks 175 years since the borough of Oldham first came into existence on 1 November 1849 due to a charter being granted on 13 June in the same year.

Join us for a free evening of fun and fireworks

Bring the whole family to the town centre for a night of excitement and celebration on Tuesday.

There will be kids' crafts from 4pm in Spindles and Tommyfield Market Hall, strolling performers throughout the evening and a firework display from Oldham Parish Hall at 6pm.

Join the Oldham British Legion for a special Festival of Remembrance

Come and join members of the Oldham British Legion for a Festival of Remembrance at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on Friday 8 November, as we come together to remember those who have served in the armed forces.

With local music and entertainment on the night, including performances from the likes of The Oldham Scottish Pipe Band, The Saddleworth Women’s Morris & Clogs Dancers and The Band of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers Lancs, it’s going to be a great night to be involved in.

Tickets cost £5 and they can be purchased in a number of ways including at your local poppy stalls and RBL branches in Oldham.

Council commits millions to keep Oldhamers warm and fed this winter

Oldham Council announced an emergency package of measures to support those most in need, with package of support worth nearly £2.5m.

The council is also urging Oldham pensioners to check if they are entitled to pension credit so they can get more money and receive the winter fuel payment.

Councillor Arooj Shah, Leader of Oldham Council, said: “We have a simple message to everyone in Oldham this winter: do not go cold or hungry.

“We’ve worked with our partners to draw up this multi-million pound package of support to make sure that whenever possible, anyone who needs help will receive it."

Oldham Fostering Awards: Celebrating 175 years of care

Just as the borough marks its own 175th anniversary, Oldham Council rolled out the red carpet for its incredible foster carers who are celebrating an awe-inspiring total of 175 years of fostering experience.

The 2024 Fostering Awards showcased the tireless dedication of those who have opened their homes to some of Oldham’s most vulnerable children, providing not just a roof over their heads but a chance for a better future. The celebration saw 14 foster carers receive special awards for their commitment to helping young people.

Oldham appoints Acting Chief Executive and offers senior leadership support to Tameside Council

Shelley Kipling has been appointed as Acting Chief Executive of Oldham Council, as current Chief Executive Harry Catherall is seconded to Tameside to offer senior leadership support following a number of senior departures and concerns over children’s services.

Oldham Council, together with Greater Manchester Combined Authority, has agreed a package of support which has been approved at Full Council meetings of both Oldham and Tameside.

The historic Prudential Building on Union Street

Historic Prudential Building saved by Oldham Council

The landmark Prudential Building in the town centre is now in the ownership of Oldham Council.

The council has used compulsory purchase powers to buy the derelict Grade II listed building next to the Oldham Central Metrolink stop on Union Street, named by the Victorian Society as one of the most at risk buildings in the UK.

Oldham Council will now prioritise making the building safe before carrying out restoration works to return it to its original glory.

Halloween fun in the Family Hubs helping children to grow in confidence

Families enjoyed a spooky Stay and Play session at Medlock Vale Family, with ghoulish games and activities to keep children entertained during the half term break.

Mehreen Khan said her five-year-old daughter Zahra Khan has been helped enormously by attending the Family Hub after struggling after the Covid pandemic.

She says her shy little girl is now a 'chatterbox', and it has also helped her 18-month-old son Mohammad Ahsan Khan with his confidence.
